History of Augmented Reality<\/h3>\n

1901:\u00a0L.Frank Baum<\/a>, an author, first mentions the idea of an electronic display\/spectacles that overlays data onto real life (in this case ‘people’), it is named a ‘character marker’.<\/p>\n

1968:\u00a0Ivan Sutherland<\/a>\u00a0invents the\u00a0head-mounted display<\/a>\u00a0and positions it as a window into a virtual world.<\/p>\n

1975:\u00a0Myron Krueger<\/a>\u00a0creates\u00a0Videoplace<\/a>\u00a0to allow users to interact with virtual objects.<\/p>\n

1980:\u00a0Steve Mann<\/a>\u00a0creates the first wearable computer, a computer vision system with text and graphical overlays on a photographically mediated scene.<\/p>\n

1984: In the film The Terminator, the Terminator uses a heads-up display in several parts of the film. In one part, he accesses a diagram of the gear system of the truck he gets into towards the end of the film.<\/p>\n

1989:\u00a0Jaron Lanier<\/a>\u00a0creates VPL Research, an early commercial business around virtual worlds.<\/p>\n

1990: The term ‘Augmented Reality’ is attributed to Thomas P. Caudell, a former Boeing researcher.<\/p>\n

1992:\u00a0Louis Rosenberg<\/a>\u00a0developed one of the first functioning AR systems, called Virtual Fixtures, at the United States Air Force Research Laboratory\u2014Armstrong, that demonstrated a benefit to human perception.<\/p>\n

1993:\u00a0Steven Feiner<\/a>,\u00a0Blair MacIntyre,\u00a0and\u00a0Doree Seligmann<\/a>\u00a0present an early paper on an AR system prototype, KARMA, at the Graphics Interface conference.<\/p>\n

1995: S. Ravela et al. at\u00a0University of Massachusetts<\/a>\u00a0introduce a vision-based system using monocular cameras to track objects (engine blocks) across views for augmented reality.<\/p>\n

1998: Spatial Augmented Reality introduced at\u00a0University of North Carolina<\/a>\u00a0at Chapel Hill by\u00a0Ramesh Raskar<\/a>, Welch,\u00a0Henry Fuchs<\/a><\/p>\n

1999: The\u00a0US Naval Research Laboratory<\/a>\u00a0engages on a decade-long research program called the Battlefield Augmented Reality System (BARS) to prototype some of the early wearable systems for dismounted soldier operating in an urban environment for situation awareness and training.<\/p>\n

2000:\u00a0Bruce H. Thomas<\/a>\u00a0develops\u00a0ARQuake<\/a>, the first outdoor mobile AR game, demonstrating it in the\u00a0International Symposium on Wearable Computers<\/a>.<\/p>\n

2001: NASA X-38 flown using LandForm software video map overlays at Dryden Flight Research Center.<\/p>\n

2004: Outdoor helmet-mounted AR system demonstrated by\u00a0Trimble Navigation<\/a>\u00a0and the Human Interface Technology Laboratory.<\/p>\n

2008: Wikitude AR Travel Guide launches on 20 Oct 2008 with the G1 Android phone.<\/p>\n

2009: ARToolkit was ported to\u00a0Adobe Flash<\/a>\u00a0(FLARToolkit) by Saqoosha, bringing augmented reality to the web browser.<\/p>\n

2012: Launch of\u00a0Lyteshot<\/a>, an interactive AR gaming platform that utilizes smart glasses for game data<\/p>\n

2013:\u00a0Google<\/a>\u00a0announces an open beta test of its\u00a0Google Glass<\/a>\u00a0augmented reality glasses.<\/p>\n

2014: Mahei creates the first generation of augmented reality enhanced educational toys.<\/p>\n

2015:\u00a0Microsoft<\/a>\u00a0announces\u00a0Windows Holographic<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0HoloLens<\/a>\u00a0augmented reality headset. The headset utilizes various sensors and a processing unit to blend high definition “holograms” with the real world.<\/p>\n

2016:\u00a0Niantic<\/a>\u00a0released\u00a0Pok\u00e9mon Go<\/a><\/i>\u00a0for\u00a0iOS<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Android<\/a>\u00a0in July 2016. The game quickly became one of the most popular smartphone applications and in turn spikes the popularity of augmented reality games.<\/p>\n

2017:\u00a0Magic Leap<\/a>\u00a0announces the use of\u00a0Digital Lightfield<\/a>\u00a0technology embedded into the\u00a0Magic Leap One<\/a>\u00a0headset. The creators edition headset includes the glasses and a computing pack worn on your belt<\/p>\n
